Basement Finishing – 5Tips to Make a Basement with a Low Ceiling Look Bigger
A low ceiling is one of the most common basement issues faced by homeowners. But, this shouldn’t be the reason not to use your basement or let it be your house’s storage room.
To help you make good use of your basement and make sure it doesn’t feel claustrophobic or cramped, here we are highlighting some simple tips to make a low-ceiling basement look bigger without making any structural changes:
Tip # 1 – Paint It with a Light Color
Even if you have a little knowledge about home design and décor, you would know that dark colors make spaces look smaller, whereas lighter shades brighten them up and make them appear bigger and more open. Therefore, opt for white or light pastel colors for your basement. To further enhance the effect, keep the color of the ceiling a shade or two lighter than the walls.
Tip # 2 – If Going for Patterns, Opt for the Simple Ones
Do not opt for very fancy or decorative paint techniques or heavily printed wallpapers because they will make your small space look even smaller.
If you are choosing a striped pattern for your paint or wallpaper, make sure to go for vertical stripes as they will help make your walls look longer. Similarly, if going for a printed wallpaper, choose the one with light colors and small prints.
Tip # 3 – Do Not Hang Anything on the Ceiling
Be it a ceiling fan, a light fixture, or any decorative item, hanging anything on the ceiling is a big NO for low-ceiling basements.
Opt for standing fans and floor or table lamps instead.
Tip # 4 – Use Long, Light Curtains
Hang long curtains to create an illusion of bigger walls. Mount the curtain rod at ceiling height and make sure the curtains are long enough that they reach the floor. Also, just like the paint, choose lighter shades for the curtains too.
It is also recommended to choose a light fabric for curtains as heavier textiles will obstruct any natural light from coming in the basement and make it look dark and small.
Tip # 5 – Do Not Go Overboard in Decoration
When it comes to buying decorating small or low-ceiling basements, remember the less is more adage. No matter how tempted you are to decorate it with several items, do not fill your basement or it will look cluttered and cramped. Place only a few furniture pieces and avoid hanging anything on the walls.
Also, instead of opting for several small pieces, go for a few comparatively bigger pieces. For example, instead of placing several chairs for seating, use a sofa, a love seat, or a couple of bean bags, whatever suits your needs best.
Basement finishing is a great way to increase your living space as well as to increase the value of your house. While small and low-ceiling basements are hard and tricky to decorate, without making them feel cluttered and cramped, it is not an impossible task.
